12.05.2003 - In 1998, a customer in California, USA, placed an order for a total of three machinery trains for a refinery in the north-east of Canada. The refinery is one of the largest in this region. A machinery train comprising a type AG090 axial compressor and a type DK080/190 condensing steam turbine manufactured by MAN Turbo was used in St. Jones. The related wet gas compressor and a further centrifugal compressor were supplied by an US manufacturer. The MAN Turbo machinery train was delivered at the end of December 1999 and commissioned in 2000.

In the fluid catalytic cracking process (FCC), heavy hydrocarbons (such as mineral oil) are converted into low-boiling hydrocarbons (such as diesel and petrol) and rendered commercially usable. The production capacity and cost efficiency of the FCC plant exert a decisive influence on the profitability of the refinery.

The entire machinery train was fully preassembled and tested. The compact MAN TURBO axial compressors comprise several standardized axial stages and a radial end stage. The essential features of this type of compressor are its compact construction and high level of availability, low flow rates with high throughputs and maximized overall efficiency. The MAN Turbo concept has already been tried and tested in over 50 FCC plants worldwide.
