12.05.2003 - In 2001, MAN Turbo received an order from Point Lisas, Trinidad, for the erection of an air separation plant. The plant is located upstream of a methanol plant and supplies the oxygen required for this process. MAN Turbo is supplying the complete machinery train: the steam turbine drives an isotherm compressor, the train being completed by an integrally geared compressor and a generator. The air separation plant is due to be commissioned in early 2003.

A so-called combined multishaft compressor of the latest design is to be used. The six-stage integrally geared compressor has two stage groups in all. The pinion shafts are fitted with an overhung-mounted impeller. The fourth pinion shaft is driven directly by the steam turbine. The compressor is equipped with adjustable stator blades. The bull gear is driven by a generator at 1800 revolutions per minute (output approx. 1000 kW at 60 Hz). The power at coupling is 16,000 kW in total.

The complete system, comprising the integrally geared compressor and steam turbine, is being supplied by MAN Turbo (single source solutions). Thanks to its extensive product range and process experience, MAN Turbo is able to supply customer solutions that are made-to-measure. A large number of references already exist for installations of this capacity (approx. 55 MW). The integrally geared compressor used in this order is impressive also due to its range of high-pressure applications (up to 70 bar) and considerable power density.
